Discovery of novel metabolic biomarkers in blood serum for diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease

Zhao, Y., Villasante-Tezanos, A., Miranda-Morales, E. G., Pappolla, M. A. & Fang, X., Nov 1 2024, In: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. 102, 1, p. 237-253 17 p.

A new method has been discovered to detect Alzheimer’s disease using a simple blood test. Blood samples from people with and without Alzheimer’s were analyzed using advanced technology to identify tiny molecules linked to the disease. Artificial intelligence helped pinpoint specific molecules that indicate Alzheimer’s with high accuracy. This breakthrough could lead to an easy, non-invasive way to diagnose the disease early, allowing for faster treatment and better patient care.

Hypercholesterolemia and Alzheimer's Disease: Unraveling the Connection and Assessing the Efficacy of Lipid-Lowering Therapies

Pappolla, M. A., Refolo, L., Sambamurti, K., Zambon, D. & Duff, K., 2024, In: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. 101, s1, p. S371-S393

High cholesterol in midlife is linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s. Studies suggest cholesterol-lowering drugs may help, but clinical trials show mixed results, possibly due to timing or patient selection. Managing cholesterol early, especially for high-risk individuals, could be key, but more research is needed on other treatment options.

Melatonin: Evolving Physiological Understanding and Potential Therapeutic Role in Pain Medicine Including Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Kaye, A. D., File, C. J., Borne, G. E., Daniel, C. P., Sharma, R., Shekoohi, S. & Pappolla, M. A., Jul 2024, In: Pain physician. 27, 5, p. 273-282 10 p.

Melatonin is known for helping with sleep, but it may also protect the spine from wear and tear. It can reduce swelling, stress on cells, and aging effects in the discs between our backbones. This could lead to new treatments for back pain, helping people feel better without surgery.

Oxidative Stress in Alzheimer's Disease: The Shortcomings of Antioxidant Therapies

Pappolla, M. A., Martins, R. N., Poeggeler, B., Omar, R. A. & Perry, G., 2024, In: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. 101, s1, p. S155-S178

Antioxidants are often seen as protective, but treatments using them have not been successful in Alzheimer’s disease. This research highlights challenges such as poor absorption, hidden causes of damage, and overly simple treatment approaches. Understanding these issues could lead to better strategies for slowing the disease’s progression.

Stem Cell Interventions in Neurology: From Bench to Bedside

Pappolla, M. A., Wu, P., Fang, X., Poeggeler, B., Sambamurti, K., Wisniewski, T. & Perry, G., 2024, In: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. 101, s1, p. S395-S416

Stem cell therapy is a new approach to treating brain diseases like stroke, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s by helping the body repair damaged cells. While progress has been made, challenges remain in making these treatments safe and effective. In the future, this research could lead to life-changing breakthroughs.

The ABC of Stem Cell Therapies for Neurological Disorders

Pappolla, M. A., Wu, P. & Sambamurti, K., Jan 1 2024, Essentials of Regenerative Medicine in Interventional Pain Management, Second Edition. Springer International Publishing, p. 543-556 14 p.

Stem cell therapy is a promising way to help with brain diseases like stroke, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s by repairing damaged nerves. Although these treatments are still being tested, early results look hopeful. In the future, they could improve brain health, slow aging, and give people better treatment options.

Therapeutic Trials in Alzheimer's Disease: Where Are We Now?

Moreira, P. I., Avila, J., Galimberti, D., Pappolla, M. A., Plascencia-Villa, G., Sorensen, A. A., Zhu, X. & Perry, G., 2024, In: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. 101, s1, p. S1-S2

Finding effective treatments for Alzheimer’s disease remains a challenge, but new approaches go beyond traditional drug therapies. Strategies like lifestyle changes, brain stimulation, and repurposed medications are being explored to slow the disease. These efforts offer hope for better treatments that may improve memory and quality of life.

Viral Infections, Are They a Trigger and Risk Factor of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Rippee-Brooks, M. D., Wu, W., Dong, J., Pappolla, M., Fang, X. & Bao, X., Mar 2024, In: Pathogens. 13, 3, 240.

Some viruses, including herpes and COVID-19, may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease by affecting brain cells and the immune system. Understanding this connection could help uncover new ways to prevent or slow the disease. If infections contribute to Alzheimer’s, vaccines or antiviral treatments might reduce the risk.
